A true story about the rise of Tierra Madre Horse & Human Sanctuary in Cave Creek, Arizona, Toward Sunrise is written by the Executive Director Emeritus of the ranch, who reflects on her years of running the nonprofit organization in partnership with its founder, Jim Gath. Sharing tales about the care of the ranch’s previously abused or neglected horses and the day-to-day chaos of a working ranch, Alexis Roeckner Ferri describes the challenge of managing the nonprofit sanctuary in the fast-paced, often gut-wrenching equine rescue world. Told alongside the struggle of growing the ranch with limited resources while saving horses from the slaughter pipeline is her battle with depression, and the lessons she learned from horses who also needed a second chance.
