**One of** The Atlantic **’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years** Strictly speaking, Lew Archer is only supposed to dig up the dirt on a rich man’s suspicious soon-to-be son-in-law. But in no time at all Archer is following a trail of corpses from the citrus belt to Mazatlan. And then there is the zebra-striped hearse and its crew of beautiful, sunburned surfers, whose path seems to keep crossing the son-in-law’s—and Archer’s—in a powerful, fast-paced novel of murder on the California coast.

Ok, I’m a mystery fan. Cut my teeth at age 13 on Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. I’ve read a lot of mysteries, mostly good to fair, a few pretty good. Now in my older years I finally decide I have to read MacDonald. I’m prepared to be disappointed. In about three pages I am absolutely hooked!. This is excellent work. His descriptions of things, places and people range from factual to lyrical. The plots are so tight they squeak. This is not your gun toting, hard drinking, hard boiled and cynical private eye. Archer is as insightful and thoughtful as any protagonist I’ve ever found. Even if you hate mysteries there would be a lot to find in MacDonalds writing. I started by dipping a toe into this book and have now read the next 4 in order. Highly recommended.
