This novel by Wilkie Collins had truly lived up to its name. There are many twists and turns along the way, and will truly keep you on your toes as a reader! This novel was composed in a Grand Style English, which immensely makes the different style of literature and the dramatic language used by Collins intriguing. The novel also has the Victorian England setting of 1859, making it crucial to account as a reader the difference in society to this current day and age. This story includes the perspective of many different characters so it is imperative to grasp who is telling the story at each chapter of the novel as all of the characters of this story play a major role in the end of the story. Each of the individual characters are aware of things that the other characters are yet to know..or maybe never know. Unlike most mystery novels, this Victorian mystery tells you the events and actions committed by each character but at the end of the story it ties in why and how these characters had done what they did. The plot takes off when Walter Hartright, a drawing teacher, tutors Marian Halcombe and her half sister, Laura Farilie. He forms a romantic connection towards the younger sister, Laura, but is saddened to find out that she is to marry a man that she doesn’t love. Laura feels obligated to marry this man, due to her fathers will. This is only one of the events during the story that truly highlights male dominance in this novel. I personally, strongly dislike this male superiority that is shown through during this novel. However, when considering that this novel was written in 1859, female empowerment in that day and age was undoubtedly distinguishable from what it is today. Without spoiling and giving away this sensational Victorian mystery novel, it is one of the first mystery and sensation novels and is truly a mystery worth reading to unfold!
