Kwame Alexander’s latest epic told in verse is a powerful, immersive tale that offers readers insight into 19th-century Africa. Though fictionalized, this important story of a young boy is rooted very much in history. The Door of No Return is a must-read for all ages.

I was a little apprehensive when I started reading this book. I know the traumatic tale of the Middle Passage and was expecting the worse. However, although it touches upon the historical aspects of the times, at heart, it is a story of one youngster’s coming of age tale interwoven with the best and worst of the time period. I ended the story with hope and I lookforward to the continuation of the story. Recommended for middle-grade readers to adults.
