**Winner of the 2017 Andre Norton Award for Outstanding Young Adult Science Fiction or Fantasy Book**! **“Funny, haunting, beautiful, relentless, and powerful, *The Art of Starving* is a classic in the making.”—Book Riot** Matt hasn’t eaten in days. His stomach stabs and twists inside, pleading for a meal, but Matt won’t give in. The hunger clears his mind, keeps him sharp—and he needs to be as sharp as possible if he’s going to find out just how Tariq and his band of high school bullies drove his sister, Maya, away. Matt’s hardworking mom keeps the kitchen crammed with food, but Matt can resist the siren call of casseroles and cookies because he has discovered something: the less he eats the more he seems to have . . . *powers*. The ability to see things he shouldn’t be able to see. The knack of tuning in to thoughts right out of people’s heads. Maybe even the authority to bend time and space. So what is lunch, really, compared to the secrets of the universe? Matt decides to infiltrate Tariq’s life, then use his powers to uncover what happened to Maya. All he needs to do is keep the hunger and longing at bay. No problem. But Matt doesn’t realize there are many kinds of hunger…and he isn’t in control of all of them. **A darkly funny, moving story of body image, addiction, friendship, and love, Sam J. Miller’s debut novel will resonate with any reader who’s ever craved the power that comes with self-acceptance.**

I loved this book and how I was taken through the journey of a teenage boy named Matt who is looking for his sister, who left home and nobody will give an explanation as to why. The author does a great job on making the story come to life, I went through lots of emotions while reading this book. I empathized with Matt, who was being bullied in school because he is gay. I’ve had bad experiences with others simply for being myself, and I knew how it felt when Matt was experiencing bullying from other kids in his school. Matt also has an eating disorder, and believes he has superpowers. He thinks he needs to avoid eating for his powers to be as sharp as possible in order to find his sister. I found this idea interesting, it gives a supernatural element to the story. Matt’s investigation on his missing sister brings him into an unexpected friendship with one of his bullies, Tariq, who he originally suspected of having something to do with his sister’s disappearance. Matt also has feelings of attraction towards him, which blossoms into a beautiful relationship. I loved seeing the connection between Matt and Tariq, and how at first I found them to be completely different from each other, but I began to see more similarities between them as the story progressed. I enjoyed the ending of the story too, and how Matt was taking steps to overcome his eating disorder and starting to feel happier. If you like heartfelt, emotional books about mental health, love, and self-acceptance, I recommend this book. Overall, this was a great book, and I would love to read it again for the first time if I could.
