Lawrence Watt-Evan’s tales of the magical land of Ethshar of the Spices had a large and devoted following in the late eighties and early nineties. Now, after nearly ten years, he brings us a new tale of mystery, magic, and madness.
The Night of Madness begins when a mysterious object falls from the heavens, creating a wave of magic in all directions. The wave brings not only a dream but an infusion of warlockry to the land, and soon all hell breaks loose. Looting, rioting, petty personal revenge, and uncontrollable madness run rampant, and all of Ethshar’s magicians seem helpless before it.
The power-hungry Lord Faran sees opportunity in the chaos, and seeks to use his newly-found warlock powers to overthrow the government and take possession of the throne for himself. His nephew, the young lord Hanner, sees the folly in this plan and struggles to restore order, but he is cast out of the royal apartments simply by association with his traitorous uncle. Now Hanner must figure out a way to stop his uncle, help the government and the Wizards’ Guild reach a compromise, choose which side to join, woo his true love — and return peace and calm to Ethshar once again.
