I found Amis’s autobiographical bits in his novel THE INFORMATION unnecessary, but it indeed was a novel. INSIDE STORY is not a novel (it even has an index). Amis already wrote his 2001 memoir EXPERIENCE and I suspect he titled INSIDE STORY a novel because of that. And it’s bizarre to read a book that’s not very good but is filled with writing advice. Amis refers to Martin the way Marcel Proust refers to Marcel in IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME, which only made me wish I’d spent my time rereading IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME.
