I loved Barnes’ Nothing to be Frightened Of and The Sense of an Ending, so I wanted to read another great one of his. I read on Goodreads that this novel despite much critical approval was self-indulgent and dull. I should have heeded the advice on Goodreads and so should you. This is a dud. Barnes seems to have wanted to write a modern British update of Bouvary and a biography of Flaubert. He did neither well here. Such a waste.
