Considering that the book was written in 1940 I’m sure it was amazing at the time. To me it seems quite dated, not as witty as it probably was. The fact that almost every single character wisecracks constantly is very much annoying. I mean it never ends and I think it takes away from the base story. The dialog makes me think of The Marx Brothers and The Three Stooges. Then of course there is so much prejudice in the book towards Indians, Japanese, Blacks, Mexicans, again a sign of those times but wow. The plot was terrible. I’m probably disappointing a lot of people, but I don’t think I could read another one of these novels.
