Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
**“Beautiful and propulsive . . . Despite the singularity of [Westover’s] childhood, the questions her book poses are universal: How much of ourselves should we give to those we love? And how much must we betray them to grow up?”—** Vogue

Educated, written by Tara Westover is a memoir documenting the struggles and learning process of a child raised in anti-government and radical religion to becoming a true Philosopher. It’s a story of learning to grow in oneself and the recovery and acceptance of an abusive life. The story describes what is was like growing up in a radical version of Mormonism, parents that rebel the government/education, mental illness, and physical/emotional abuse that is not acknowledged. Tara beautifully recounts her experiences and what she was feeling in the very moment rather than solely recounting the stories in the way she can see them now. She is even open about the repression of some of the memories she’s faced. The book shows the ability to love and forgive even when the circumstances are hard and takes you through every rollercoaster emotion you can fathom. The entire time you’re rooting for Tara to evolve. Her story connected to a lot of emotions I was very familiar with and inspires you to want to grow yourself; a very powerful emotion to provoke in a reader where you don’t want to put the book down. I would HIGHLY recommend this book for everyone, it’s an amazing read. I have even copied down some of the quotes that resonated with myself as a reminder of what we are all capable of achieving in this world. No matter the circumstances, or where you come from, you can be successful and decide to create a path of life you desire.
