A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose—and her mind has been shattered… When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it’s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him—and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice’s sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past—and the threat that follows in her wake—will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

Every so often you come across a Nora Roberts novel that feels like she was coming up on a deadline and wasn’t feeling the pitch she sold the book on anymore, but she didn’t want to let all that research go to waste. This is one of those. There are several female narrators in this and you get the sense that the writer was conflicted about which one she really wanted to be the ultimate heroine, before finally settling on Bodine. I really wanted to like Bodine. It’s clear she’s based on Connie Selleca’s character from Hotel. But Bodine is frustratingly self righteous and she doesn’t get over it in time to get the reader fully invested in her. It looks like she might when she loses her chill after finding the first body, but no. She is back up on her high horse the very next chapter. What makes it worse is that a lot of her narrative is relentless minutiae about the resort ranch business. Meanwhile, Bo’s missing aunt Alice is going through a hellish experience that really does make the reader sympathize and forgive her callow behavior at the start of the book, but I can see why Roberts decided not to make her the ultimate heroine of the central love story. It would be very difficult to depict her recovery complete with a romance, without it coming across as extremely problematic. Honestly I feel like the fish out of water who finds her legs, Bo’s potential sister-in-law Jessica, had better heroine potential, but Bo’s brother Chase is also a self righteous pill. I can fully understand why Roberts went with Bo’s beau Callen as the hero. A trick pony rider turned successful stuntman who comes home to take care of his mother, Cal is immensely likable from the moment he appears. And so is his clever horse Sundown. I’m sorry, I like Sundown, but the way the horse’s name was used for the title feels misleading and overly cute for such a dark story. Anyway, I would have preferred maybe Jessica and Callen, both of them being a great deal more likable and interesting to follow narratively, but given that neither of them are part of the family of resort owners in this story I guess I can also see why Roberts resisted putting them together. She has a formula that rarely involves a central romance between members of the working class. Usually I’m into that fantasy for my downtime reading, but this time it rankled, and a big part of that was the willful blindness of the Bodine-Longbow clan as they prioritized frivolous things while Alice suffered unthought of unless it was something egregiously uncharitable. I would say that if you’re an NR completist you’ll want to read this but casual fans can give it a pass.
