As Japan stands on the precipice of transformation under the new emperor’s decree to bury the past, Mi finds herself torn between the relentless march of progress and her loyalty to an old friend. When a trusted confidant arrives severely wounded after participating in a rebellion against the emerging order, Mi’s world is thrown into turmoil. Determined to heal her friend, Mi deploys all her formidable skills, but her impulsive decision to join him in his quest to overturn the new order unravels the life she had so carefully built. As the weight of her actions bears down upon her, she finds herself falsely imprisoned, facing the ominous specter of death. In the midst of her darkest hours, Mi comes to realize the profound wisdom of an ancient proverb—that the past is the future of the present. The echoes of history reverberate through her captivity, revealing the intricate tapestry of consequences woven by her choices and those of the society she once called home. In this gripping culmination of the series, Mi’s resilience is put to the ultimate test. Join her as she navigates a landscape fraught with danger, betrayal, and political upheaval. As she confronts the consequences of her impetuous choices, the line between the past and present blurs, leaving her to grapple with the true price of redemption in a rapidly evolving Japan.

This is a voluntary and independent ARC review, and a strong recommendation: this book is not a standalone, and the best way to appreciate Mi’s story is to begin at the trilogy’s beginning. We open this final volume with dutiful Japanese daughter/wife Mi at a critical point in her life: her money-focused father has married her off to the gaijin doctor who has taught her basic medicine, abused her verbally, and left her alone while he indulged his opium habit. His uncle, their benefactor, is revealed as the master spy sent to cement their influence in Japan, and they are being forced to flee Japan. Mi refuses to go, and calls upon her native intelligence, her keen powers of observation and deductive reasoning, her many acquired skills, and her ingrained stubbornness to carve out a life on her own. Her path is arduous, beset with grief, danger, violence, and imprisonment, and an incredible psychological war with a master torturer. The choices she makes are astonishingly brave, the price she pays is unthinkably high, and her eventual fate is not a settled future. That would not suit Mi! Does she obtain the precious independent life she has fought for? Perhaps. The reader must judge how satisfacory the story’s ending feels. I felt, after living vicariously through all she endured, that her outcome suited her character and her ambitions. Mi remains in my mind as a person of heroic endurance, indomitable courage, and absolute authenticity. Her story will resonate with any reader who has had to struggle for adult autonomy and basic human respect, be it against family dynamics, society’s expectations, or ingrained cultural norms. For those who need a hero – Mi-san is mighty indeed.
