Kefalonia, 1941. Captain Corelli, an enigmatic young Italian officer, is posted to the idyllic Greek island as part of the Axis occupying forces. Shunned by the locals at first, he proves to be civilised, humorous – and a consummate musician. The captain is soon thrown together with Dr Iannis’s strong-willed and beautiful daughter, Pelagia, who discovers all of the complexities of love, and how it can blossom in the most unexpected and profound way. Rona Munro’s adaptation of Louis de Bernières’ much-loved epic novel, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, premiered on tour of the UK in 2019, before transferring to London’s West End.

I find it a lot harder to explain it when I love a book then when I hate it–which makes this a hard review to write. Obviously, looking through others’ ratings and reviews, not everyone loves this book. I suspect in some cases, it’s because despite expectations the book might lead you to, you’re not going to get the conventional romance. Other reviewers I read found it tedious–and it is a long, discursive book studded with chapters of letters, diary, interior monologue among the mostly omniscient third-person narrative. I found that part of the book’s charm, and the story kept my interest throughout because of its exuberance, it’s wonderfully quirky characters, its sense of humor, the often gorgeous, quotable prose, the way it transported me to another place and time–and yes, its romance.
