In 1941, under Stalin’s rule, the people of the Baltic States were being taken from their homes and deported to workcamps in Siberia. Lina 15, her brother Jonas 10, and their mother, Elena were rounded up and sent away. Their father had disappeared shortly before that. They were placed in one workcamp under horrible conditions with little food for a while and then they were shipped off to a workcamp in Siberia where conditions were even worse. I love this author’s style of writing and I really enjoyed reading this story although it was very sad in a lot of areas. I have never read anything before about the Siberian workcamps and this was very informative. I loved the cast of characters in this book but I did feel that the ending was very abrupt. I hope to read more of this author’s books in the future.
