Old Charlie wasn’t much of a horse. He was thin, his coat was rough, and he was too old to work. His owner wanted to sell him to a canning factory. But Bruce, who was twelve, and Pinky, who was six, loved hiim and were determined to save him.
They could buy Old Charlie if they could raise .00. But there was only a week to get the money and to persuade their father. He thought backyard in the city was no place for such a large animal.
There were neighbors to consider, too. Neighbors like Mrs. Diggle, who spied on everyone and would surely report a horse to the police.
They tried shining shoes, mowing lawns, and finally selling lemonade. They were certain they would never earn the money in time.
This story is full of fun and surprises. It will gladden the hearts of all children who have longed for a horse. Boys and girls will laugh, too, at the unexpected difficulties a horse in the city can bring.
No one surpasses Mr. Bulla in writing stories for beginning readers, says the Saturday Review. Old Charlie will be enjoyed not only by beginning readers, but by older readers as well.
