Crenshaw is a giant imaginary cat who has returned to young Jackson’s world after having been gone since Jackson was about 3 years old. Jackson’s family is in crisis again – no money, little food, few job prospects, illness. Crenshaw is helping Jackson to cope with this life. The book presents a different look at family homelessness. The writing is more serious and less charming as others by the author, in keeping with the subject matter. Reading it could help children facing similar situations.
