So unlike modern detective crime novels which take shorter periods to reach conclusions and a ridiculous amount of action and violence in between. It was almost tedious how many times Chandler revisited a person, place or thing before getting to some kind of point. But! When he finally got there it was just short of brilliant. However, it is hard to respect a guy (Marlowe) who goes out of his way getting beat up along the way for morally challenged rich people he just met, then is too proud to accept money for his efforts. I kept asking myself why and pegged him to be a bit of a lonely sucker desperate for friends. But it is not really the truth. I just don’t understand what is.
