Della Langston could marry the pompous Oliver Pendleton or experience the adventure of the world beyond Boston. Anna introduced her to the option that was becoming a Mail Order Bride, and soon enough Della had disappointed her family and left for the West to marry a blacksmith and landowner in Julian, California. Della should have recognized the tribulations of the trip as an indication of her bad decision, but she did not. Stranded, robbed of her money, Della had choices to make once again.
